IS 600 horsepower
all that it's cracked up to be?

In short, YES. And that's a little disappointing frankly. Reason being, you've spent all this time making yourself believe that the 150 odd horsepower that you have in your own car is adequate. You tell yourself that it's impossible to use even that magnitude of power leave alone any more on the streets of our city, or anywhere this side of the Autobahn for that matter.
Once reasonably convinced, you find yourself putting that theory to test in the drivers' seat of a 600bhp behemoth – the Bentley Continental GT Speed. It takes just a single dab of the accelerator pedal, and everything you know to be true goes flying out the window. Press the accelerator pedal with any sort of intent and you pass half a dozen cars in one fell sweep. You begin to look for, and relish, clear patches of road where you can really exploit the power. And the most surprising thing of all is that you seem to find so many more opportunities than you would have otherwise imagined. You put pedal to the metal, in earnest, a few times in succession, and finally begin to understand the point of it all.

There's a certain immediacy in the GT Speed that you don't expect in a car as big as this – you forget very quickly that you're driving a car that weighs almost two and a half tonnes and costs almost as many crores |

The first thing that strikes you is the size of the Continental GT. It's a two door coupe but a large one at that. The other thing that strikes you are the exquisite 20 inch, 26 spoke, forged aluminum wheels on the GT Speed. These house 16.5 inch carbon ceramic disc brakes with massive 8 piston calipers – the largest brakes ever fitted to a production car. Yet none of this looks excessive on the Bentley. Instead you notice the beautiful haunches, reminiscent of Bentley's of old, that gleam in the sunlight. You also notice the front and rear lights that are completely flush with body. The bright red paint of our test car made the GT Speed stand out in Delhi traffic more than it ordinarily would. The advantage, of course, is that you don't even have to blow the horn, as people see you from afar and automatically get out of your way. And you can't really blame them either since it looks truly imposing as it's barreling towards you. |
