Changing Gears

THEY SAY ‘GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT,’ ‘LUCK FAVOURS THE BRAVE,’ AND ‘AS YOU SOW SO SHALL YOU REAP.’

Whoever they are! But, we believe them. And, to that end, we’ve grown this magazine progressively and patiently over the years, we jumped into the deep end four-and-a-half years ago, and we’ve attempted to be as just as possible ever since. Thankfully, it’s gotten us to a point where we’re able to provide a unique perspective to a willing audience.

But, we still have a long way to go. You see, our aim has always been to put you in the driver’s seat of the cars we test, or on the saddle of the bikes we ride, with a view to involve you in the experience and give you a sense that these machines are actually living, breathing creatures that have a soul – rather than inert objects with wheels and a power source. Fortunately, we get feedback from our readers to suggest that we’re on the right track. But, where we’re still lacking is in the area of scientific testing of these vehicles.

Recently, I visited the test facility of one of Europe’s leading car magazines, and what I found completely blew me away. Not only did they have their own track, on and off road, as well as testing equipment that looked as though it was sourced from the Starship Enterprise, but they actually got press vehicles for weeks at a stretch – sometimes more than one example of a particular model. So, they could strip it completely (often more than once) and place sensors, lasers, and other clever devices all over the car to examine parts that you don’t necessarily see, but those that certainly affect the ownership experience in the long run.

Our inability to conduct such thorough tests stems from the fact that the press fleets of manufacturers in India is still woefully small. But it is expanding. And, from that point of view, it could be another barometer for the growth and maturity of the market. As India becomes more important on a global scale, the press fleets will continue to expand and allow us to bring you more comprehensive reviews. In fact, just this past month on our own shores we had the chance to sample some of the most technologically advanced and uniquely styled cars from the Audi stable – the RS5 and A7.

So, we’ll continue to be patient – while being audacious at the same time, not to mention objective while we’re at it. And, as the press fleets grow, so will the substance in our reviews. But, more than that, it’ll be another gauge for the dynamism of our market. In the meantime, work hard, play hard, and be good!
