With the ongoing development in the infrastructure of our Capital City leading up to the Common Wealth Games in 2010, as well as the modernization of the airport, New Delhi could well be placed to host an F1 race in the near future.

Dr. Mallya’s been passionate about bringing F1 to India, specifically to India Gate, for some time now. “Delhi, to me, seems the most feasible. India Gate and around that area, would make a superb track on the street. I’m fortunate that my track record speaks for itself. When I go after something, I get it done. And I believe that India must have a Formula 1 race,” he said emphatically.

Dr. Mallya even brought along Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher to his last meeting with Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. The Delhi Government certainly seems to be supportive of the idea. A street race in the heart of Delhi would put the city well and truly on the world stage.

The high profile sport of F1 not only adds to the appeal of a city but also attracts a great deal of tourism to its host cities. Furthermore, a street circuit, as proposed by Dr. Mallya, would also eliminate the need to build a specifically designed F1 track, which would require an investment to the tune of Rs. 350 to 400 crores. Although the revenue an F1 race generates for its host city can well exceed that figure on an annual basis.

Singapore is among the cities in the Asia Pacific shooting for an F1 race – in this case they’re talking about hosting F1’s first night race in the streets of the city.

F1 Boss, Bernie Ecclestone, has been in favour of races in emerging markets for some time. It now appears that many of thepieces may be falling into place for New Delhi.
