A recent Sunday morning saw 50 beautiful classics revelling in the last of the winter sunshine in the courtyard of the DLF Emporio Mall in New Delhi – courtesy of the Teachers Origin Heritage Celebration, organized in association with the Heritage Motoring Club of India.
We caught glimpses of a 1934 Rolls Royce, 1937 Mercedes 170V Roadster, two 1942 Jeeps, a 1950 Jaguar XK120, 1952 Cadillac Coupe de Ville, 1954 Dodge Kingsway, 1955 Plymouth Belvedere, 1957 Morgan Replica, 1959 Chevrolet Impala, 1960 Mercedes Fintail, 1964 Ford Mustang, and many more.
The 1934 Rolls Royce 20/25 is a 7-seater passenger sedan, which had been ordered from Rolls Royce by the Maharaja of Baroda in July 1934. It’s the only Rolls Royce in India that features coachwork by Kellner of France. American automobiles, with their substantial girth and massive V8s, had a huge presence as well. The 1952 Series 62 Cadillac Coupe de Ville has a 5.4 liter V8 producing 190 horsepower. The 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air, featuring a 4.5 liter V8, was once owned by the Maharaja of Tehri Garhwal.
The Best of Show went to Ranjit Malik for his Rolls Royce Phantom 1; Best Performance to Atul P Anand for his MG YT; Best Roadster went to Mrs. Kehr for her Jaguar XK120, followed by Sandeep Katari who owns the Triumph TR3. The Best Classic award went to Diljeet Titus for his 1935 Buick 90L, followed by HW Bhatnagar, who was 1st runner up for his 1935 Plymouth. There were also awards for Best Post War Classics, which were won by Naresh Ojha for his Jaguar Mark X, followed by Ashok Kaicker for his 1952 Chevrolet Bel Air.
Apart from the exhibition, the organizers also arranged a TSD (Time Speed Distance) rally, starting from the Emporio Mall going up to the Pataudi Palace – covering a distance of around 70 kilometres one way.
All in all, it was a Sunday well spent – with rare automobiles that seem to only get better with age.
