We're coming up to what is probably the hottest part of the year, and most people will be making sure their ACs are in good working condition and up to the task of keeping things temperate. Yet in Europe, and across the pond from there, its getting very cool. Cool not necessarily in terms of temperature, but certainly in terms of major racing events. You see, lovers of sports and motorsport in particular are in for a bit of a bonanza as we get into May and June. May means the French Open for tennis fans but more importantly it signals the start of a motorsports orgy! In fact, these two months will see three of the greatest track races in the world.
The Monaco Grand Prix
is the most glamorous
motor race in the world
First off, there is Formula One of course – two races in May and the same number in June. But as far as great races go, in terms of importance, prestige and atmosphere there is nothing to beat the fabulous Monte Carlo Grand Prix that takes place in the principality of Monaco. Monte Carlo has romance attached to it – it also has the casinos where fortunes are made (and lost) and then there is the aura of the famous actress the late Grace Kelly, who became Her Serene Highness – The Princess of Monaco. A round-the-houses street race, the Monaco GP traces its origins back to one Anthony Noghes who was insulted by the Association of Recognised Automobile Clubs, the FIA equivalent then, not granting membership to his club – Automobile Club de Monaco. So as many are wont to do in such situations, he got together with his fellow Monegasque Louis Chiron, a well-known racer at the time, to organise a race for himself.

The intense summer brings with it three of the greatest races in the world - the Monaco Grand Prix, Indy 500 and 24 Hours of Le Mans. The heat may be on but a trip across the oceans can make for a really cool summer!

The fans at Monaco get closer to the action than anywhere else in the world |

Details of the first race are a little sketchy but the 1st Monaco Grand Prix was held on the 14th of April 1929. Prince Pierre of Monaco inaugurated the track with a lap of honour after which 16 cars lined up on the grid, the positions being drawn by lots. The field had a number of (what would be considered exotic) marques today - Bugattis, Alfa Romeos, Maseratis, and a Mercedes SSK. An Englishman who, having reached too late for the official trials, impressed with an unofficial practice run early in the morning, went on to win the 100-lap race. Today Monaco is a different kettle of fish, having garnered the honour of the most important and glamorous race on the F1 calendar.
Everybody wants to win at Monaco, even though the track is short and narrow, there is virtually no overtaking, and drivers have even driven off the track and into harbour waters on more than one occasion! Past winners Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, Graham Hill, Alain Prost, Stirling Moss and Jackie Stewart have each won more than once, while Jean-Pierre Beltoise, Ricardo Patrese and Olivier Panis have been surprise winners. This year, the Monaco Grand Prix is on the 25th of May. |
