The annual, and always spectacular, Goodwood Festival of Speed was held during the second weekend of July at Goodwood Estate in West Suxxex, England – 60 miles from London. Lord March, founder of the event, lets some of the most renowned cars and drivers invade his estate every year in June to put on a fabulous show for the public.
The highlights of 2008 included a visit by Lewis Hamilton – one week after his dramatic victory at Siverstone. He took a bow in front of his home fans from the balcony of Goodwood House, and also took to the track (Lord March’s rather large driveway) in his F1 McLaren-Mercedes.
While Lewis was busy entertaining the crowds and taking in the atmosphere, Justin Law in his 1990 Jaguar XJR12 set the fastest time of the weekend. As always, amidst the carnival atmosphere, visitors got to see some of the finest competition cars and motorcycles ever built – piloted by some of the most famous names in motorsport.
The highly anticipated central display this year was a celebration of 60 years of Land Rover. The 40-foot steel structure demonstrated the go-anywhere ability, literally speaking, that Land Rover has been famous for throughout its history.
The Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ automotive design competition was won by the rare and beautiful 1930 Mercedes Benz 710 SSK ‘Trossi Roadster’ owned by Ralph Lauren. The Supercar Run featured as many as three versions of the Bugatti Veyron, as well concepts like the Mazda Furai. |
