Lotus confirms the City Car for 2013 launch

Lotus has confirmed that they would be putting their City Car in production. The car is scheduled for an October 2013 launch. Showcased at last year’s Paris Motor Show, the concept is a 3 door compact car that can seat upto four persons. Featuring a 1.2 litre three-cylinder engine, the Lotus City Car offers a combined output of 217bhp with 240Nm of torque. The City Car has a total travel range of 500 kilometres, of which it can run 60 kilometres purely on the electrical charge from the battery. Weighing less than 1400 kilograms, the City Car is capable of reaching a top speed of 170 km/h when consuming power from the IC engine and 120 km/h when running on batteries.

The City Car benefits from carrying the tag of being zero on emissions when run on electric mode. Furthermore, the 1.2 litre engine has the ability to run on either ethanol or methanol apart from regular gasoline, thus helping expand the ‘green’ quotient of the car. It is believed that Lotus is going to produce three versions – a European, an Asian and a sports model.

GM Sail EV on its way to India

General Motors recently took the covers off their latest electric offering – Sail EV. Showcased at the Guangzhou Motor Show, the model would first hit China followed by an Indian debut in April 2011. The concept is powered by a lithium-ion battery that is capable of providing a maximum power output of 87bhp with 220 Nm of torque. The Sail EV has a top speed of 130 km/h and can cover a distance of 150 kilometres on a single charge.

GM India was contemplating a technical tie-up with REVA electric car company and even displayed a jointly developed Spark electric concept during the Auto Expo in 2008. Somehow this joint venture could not take off resulting in REVA tying up with Mahindra and Mahindra to expand its electric car portfolio in the country. From that perspective, developing the Sail for the Indian market will be a huge bonus for the American manufacturer given that the Indian automobile market has an immense growth potential. The Sail is going to offer three engines – petrol, diesel and an electric version – which will be showcased in 2011.
