The Los Angeles Auto Show, one of the leading motor shows in the world, was held in the first week of December, during which time it featured more than 30 world and North American debuts – ranging from affordable and fuel-efficient vehicles like the Ford Fiesta, to the ultra luxury, like the Rolls Royce Ghost, and the first supercar from Lexus – the $375,000 (Rs. 1.7 crore) Lexus LFA.

The theme for this years’ show, unsurprisingly, was centered around energy efficiency – with more than a dozen concept vehicles unveiled, all focused on all-electric or partial-electric propulsion, as plug-in vehicles become more of a priority for auto manufacturers. In all, there were more than 50 new hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles, including hybrids, modern clean-diesels, electrics, hydrogen fuel cells, natural gas and ethanol-powered vehicles on display.

BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics Concept

This beautiful concept promises the performance of an M3 with the fuel economy of a Prius. This concept has a 1.5-liter turbo-diesel 3-cylinder that produces 161bhp and 214lb/ft of torque. A rear AC motor produces 51bhp for brief periods, while a front-mounted AC motor produces a steady 80bhp, or a peak 139bhp for as much as 10 seconds. Total output is calculated to be 351bhp and 590lb/ft of torque.

Porsche Boxster Spyder

Epitomizing the adage, ‘less is more,’ Porsche rolled out the Boxster Spyder for its world debut at the LA Auto Show. The third model in the Boxster lineup has a unique look, and apparently the driving personality on par with a 911 GT3 RS. The Boxster Spyder features a mid-mounted 3.4-liter six-cylinder engine with Direct Fuel Injection. Maximum output is 320 horsepower – 10 more than the Boxster S. The combination of more horsepower, less weight courtesy of a canopy top, an all-new sport suspension, a lower center of gravity, a standard limited slip differential, and exclusive wheels should provide the kind of driving dynamics to back up its unique and racy appearance.

Mercedes Benz SLS AMG

A replacement for the McLaren SLR – the SLS AMG is Mercedes’ latest supercar, and a showstopper everywhere it goes. The styling is inspired by the classic Mercedes Gullwing of the 1950’s. Powering the SLS is a revised version of AMG’s now-familiar 6.2-liter 32-valve V8. In the SLS, the engine makes a not inconsiderable 563bhp at 6800rpm.
