Nico Rosberg has set the fastest time to start the 2016 Belgian Grand Prix from pole for Mercedes. Max Verstappen clocked in a quicker time that the two Ferraris to start from the front row of the grid.
In the final session of qualifying at Spa Francorchamps, Rosberg was left alone to try and set the fastest time to claim pole for Mercedes. With threat from both Red Bulls and Ferraris, Rosberg set the quickest lap on his first run.
But it was Max Verstappen, the young Dutch driver, racing for Red Bull who beat his team mate, Daniel Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel respectively for a provisional front row start.
On the second run in Q3, Kimi Raikkonen who has ruined his first run, set an average first sector to split the two Redbulls for third in the Ferrari to set the third fastest time. Vettlel then improved his time to go even faster than Ricciardo to lock out the second row for Ferrari.
With Rosberg and Verstappen on the front row confirmed, it was Raikkonen who will start from third on the grid, ahead of Vettel in fourth. RIcciardo failed to improve his earlier time and will now start from fifth on the grid.
Sergio Perez will join him on the third row in sixth, with Nico Hulkenberg, Valterri Bottas, Jenson Button and Felipe Massa make up the top ten for the Belgian Grand Prix start on Sunday.
Lewis Hamilton will start from the very back of the grid after his 55-place grid penalty for exceeding the allocated number of power unit components for a season. He only set a single lap time in the first qualifying session to meet the 107% rule. Hamilton will be joined by Fernando Alonso and Marcus Ericsson who will both take grid penalties for similar violations in different quantities.
