Renault Kaptur Preview
When it was launched in 2011, the Duster brought Renault on the map in India, but the larger Koleos couldn’t quite bring as good results. To bridge the gap between these two SUV offerings Renault will being in the Kaptur to Indian shores sometime next year.
Revealed earlier this year in March, the Kaptur is the same model that the French car maker sells in Europe as the Captur. In fact, the India-spec model will even look identical to the one on sale in European, but that’s where the similarities end. While the Captur is based on the Clio platform, the Kaptur will be based on the Duster platform. Renault has been able to stretch the platform to the limit and increase the length by 211mm, width by 35mm and height by 47mm over its Euro twin. Wheelbase too has been stretched by 68mm over the Captur.
Thanks to the marginal increase in wheelbase and dimensions, the Kaptur will make slightly more room than the Duster. The model that was unveiled earlier this year, sported an all-black interior with hints of chrome around the centre console, AC vents and gear lever.
As far as mechanicals go, although Renault hasn’t officially disclosed the specifications yet, expect the Kaptur to come with the same engine options as the Duster. The petrol will continue be powered by the same 1.6-litre 4-cylinder motor while the diesel will be the tried and tested 1.5-litre mill. The engine may come paired with a 6-speed manual as well as the 6-speed Easy-R AMT. The top-spec model may also come with the optional 4x4 system and a different suspension setup as in the Duster.
When launched the Kaptur expect it to come at a starting price of around Rs 16 lakh in which case it will lock horns with the Hyundai Tucson.
