Watching an F1 race on television, as you'd normally do, means that you'll certainly be able to keep track of what's happening in the race, and probably won't miss much of the action – no matter where on the circuit it takes place, or even in the pits for that matter. But believe me when I tell you that it's little or no consolation compared with actually being there and feeling the excitement. The atmosphere is electric – you feel like you're at the center of the universe.
Whether or not you're a die hard F1 fan is immaterial – the excitement is infectious and the spectacle of F1 is something else altogether. You have to be there to experience it for yourself, to comprehend just how fast these machines really

are, and hear why people close their ears when an F1 car is about to be fired up. The way these machines brake, corner and accelerate is staggering, all of which is heightened by the deafening noise they make. I had the pleasure of attending the inaugural US Grand Prix at Indianapolis in 2000. Even the locals, veterans of the legendary Indy 500, were taken aback and pleasantly surprised.

When and if you plan on attending your first F1 race, try and do so at a historic circuit such as Spa in Belgium with the famous Eau Rouge corner or Monza in Italy with its flat out straights – you can literally feel the history in places such as these. If you're a Ferrari fan, then Monza should certainly be on top of your list. On the other hand, I've been told by the former Press Relations officer of the erstwhile Prost F1 team that even Monteral and Japan have a great atmosphere and spirit. Although Suzuka, which was one of the greatest circuits on the calendar, no longer hosts the Japanese Grand Prix. Geographically however, circuits that are most accessible from India are Malaysia, China and Bahrain – all state of the art facilities.
But if you want to be part of history, see the first ever night race in F1, which takes place at Singapore in September 2008. |
