6 The Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance
Carmel, California, USA --------------------- August

The Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance is an event that highlights the art of the automobile. On the 18th hole of the very famous and exclusive Pebble Beach golf course, overlooking the Pacific Ocean, you can see some of the most rare, beautiful and painstakingly restored cars on the planet.

The event was first held in 1950 and has marked its place firmly on the world automotive calendar. This is definitely the premier event of its kind in the world and a 'can't miss' if you're a 'connoisseur.' Concours d'Elegance literally translates to 'a competition of elegance,' and that's exactly what this is – a fierce competition at that.

The Concours is a tribute to some of the most stunning and historically significant cars ever made. Those who enter their cars at Pebble Beach – obviously restricted to ensure that every single nut, bolt and washer is exactly how it was, if not a little shinier, than the day it came from the factory.

You'll also see a few different exhibits at the event including concept cars from different manufacturers, famous personalities and past racing champions, and all in one of the most scenic parts of the world.

To give you a sense of the type of cars on display – many of which are worth several million dollars apiece – the overall winner in 2007 was a 1935 Duesenberg SJ Special, and in the year prior, a 1931 Daimler Double-Six 50 Corsica Drophead Coupe. Famous designer, Ralph Lauren, has taken best of show honors twice in the past (in 1990 and 1993) with cars from his impeccable stable.

The 2008 event will be the 58th annual, and you may well want to consider a visit if you think you'll enjoy seeing the most rare and exotic cars ever produced basking in their own glory – not to mention under the California sun.

Racing legend Sir Stirling Moss is among the many famous personalities you're likely to encounter at Pebble Beach >>
