GM looks to boost volumes
GM India has put off its plans to launch the Cadillac and Hummer vehicles in India. The company will not be launching the vehicles as they address a very niche market and do not generate big volumes. The company is also looking to boost volumes significantly with the launch of its mini-car, the Chevrolet Spark in April 2007. The car is based on the once-popular Daewoo Matiz platform and will compete

with Hyundai’s Santro, Maruti Udyog’s Wagon R, as well as its New Zen. The Chevy Spark will be manufactured in GM India’s Halol plant initially, where it is scaling up production from 60,000 units to 85,000 units. The Halol plant will be able to produce only 2,000 units of the mini car every month. GM has a few other launches lined up including the Aveo U-VA hatchback very soon. The U-VA will come fitted with a 1.2 litre engine that will enable it to benefit from excise duty cuts.
