Volkswagen recently showcased the all-new version of the Touareg SUV. The new Touareg is 200 kilos lighter than its predecessor, and 20% more fuel-efficient – while, at the same time, more spacious, refined, and capable off-road. The fresh design elements have been derived from the new range of VW cars, such as the Golf Mk VI, the new Polo, and even the Scirocco. The end result is an SUV that certainly looks more svelte and
car-like than before. And, unlike the first generation Touareg,
the new model has short front
and rear overhangs for better off road capabilities.
The overall length and wheelbase have each grown by 40mm, however the width remains the same, while the overall height has been dropped by 20mm. On the power-train front, it features an all-new eight-speed transmission, as well as start-stop technology, touch screen satellite navigation, Side Assist (covering the cars’ blind spots), and adaptive roll compensation air suspension. Another option is the High Beam Assist – a system that automatically dips the headlights when it senses oncoming traffic.
The Touareg now also gets hybrid propulsion, as well as a couple of diesel engines. The hybrid has a 3.3-litre supercharged petrol V6, producing 330 horsepower and 265lb/ft of torque, as well as an electric motor generating an additional 45 horsepower. The combination produces a total output of 375 horsepower and 428lb/ft of torque – enabling it to accelerate to 100km/h in a very healthy 6.5 seconds. Plus, the electric motor has the capability to operate independently from the combustion engine, making the new Touareg a full hybrid. According to VW, this SUV can be powered by the electric motor up to speeds of 30 mph (50 km/h). And, when needed, the V6 can step in and provide a top speed of up to 250km/h. The 3.0-litre V6 TDI, meanwhile, produces 235bhp and 405lb/ft of torque, while returning 16.5 km/l and emitting
195 g/km of CO2.
There’s also a 4.2-litre TDI V8 engine that produces 335bhp and a massive 590lb/ft of torque. Plus, the Touareg comes with 4Motion, which comprises of reduced gearing, centre and rear differentials that can each be fully locked for off-road applications, and five stage control for the four wheel drive system – to ensure that you can really take this luxury SUV anywhere you wish in leather lined comfort. |

V6 power for the Panamera |

If the current 1.4 crore price tag for the V8 Panamera S is a little too rich for your blood, fear not, because Porsche will soon launch V6-powered variants of this four-door sports car. The V6 Panamera will debut in both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive variants at the Beijing Motor Show in April this year.
What will now be the base Panamera will be powered by a brand new, direct injection, 90-degree V6 producing 300 horsepower and 300lb/ft of torque. The active all-wheel drive version will be known as the Panamera 4. Both models come standard with Porsche’s dual-clutch PDK transmission, as well as auto start-stop for increased efficiency. As a result, Porsche is claiming a fuel efficiency figure of around 11km/l – very respectable for a Porsche. Furthermore, to reduce weight, parts such as the doors, bonnet, wings and boot are made from either aluminum or a combination of aluminum and magnesium. Lastly, customers also have the option of adaptive air suspension if they so choose. |

More power for the Turbo |

Just in case you felt that the Porsche 911 Turbo, with 500 horsepower, wasn’t quite powerful enough – Porsche will launch the Turbo S at the Geneva Motor Show in March this year. The engine, along with its variable turbine geometry twin-turbos, has been tweaked to deliver 530 horsepower and 515lb/ft of torque. And that means that the Turbo S can accelerate to 100km/h in, hold your breath, 3.3 seconds!
The Turbo S features Porsche’s seven-speed PDK, double-clutch gearbox, along with steering mounted paddles that provide power to all four wheels via Porsche Traction Management (PTM). The Turbo S also features Dynamic Engine Mounts, as well as Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV), and a mechanical limited slip rear differential. Apart from this, there are Dynamic Cornering Lights, 19-inch RS wheels with central locking nuts, adaptive sports seats, cruise control, and a CD/DVD changer thrown in as well – should you tire of the flat-six growl behind you. |
