Ssangyong forays into the Indian market with the Rexton W
It was at the Auto Expo that we first saw Ssangyong and Mahindra together in India and at that point in time they had announced their intention to bring the Rexton to India and now they have. Mahindra with the Ssangyong Rexton has finally entered into the high-end SUV range. The two variants on offer, the RX5 with manual transmission and the RX7 with automatic transmission are both powered by a 2.7-litre, 5 cylinder turbo-diesel engine with varying power outputs. The 5-speed manual gets 164bhp with torque on demand, which allows you to select between 4H, and 4L while the 5-speed E-tronic automatic gets 184 horses and is a full-time 4WD.
The Rexton also comes loaded with features like a sunroof, rear-parking sensors, automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, cruise control and steering-mounted audio controls and climate control. Mahindra says that the Rexton delivers an ARAI-claimed fuel-efficiency figure of 12.4km/l for the manual Rexton and 11.18km/l for the automatic version. As far as price is concerned, the Rexton will be offered at an introductory price of `17.67 lakh for the manual variant, while the automatic costs `19.67 lakh (prices ex-showroom, Mumbai). The Toyota Fortuner, the Ford Endeavour, the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and even the Hyundai Santa Fe have their work cut out for them as the Rexton makes a strong statement for itself.
