One of the most trusted brands in India in terms of quality and service has been Toyota. Because of which, the Toyota Fortuner SUV has been a big hit in the Indian market in addition to its off-road capabilities.
The first generation Fortuner was launched n India in 2009, and now, after a successful six years, the second generation Fortuner is set to arrive shortly. Here are eight things you need to know about the new Toyota Fortuner.
The second generation Toyota Fortuner has seen a dramatic design change from the outgoing model. Toyota has employed their “Keen Look” design philosophy similar to what we found on the current Corolla Altis. At the front are slim projector headlamps with integrated LED daytime-running-lights (DRLs). the rear has also received similar styling changes and features full LED tail lamps. The interior has also been completely redesigned and will feature certain equipment that can be found on the new Innova Crysta.
Engine options in the new Toyota Fortuner include the 2.4-litre and 2.8-litre, four-cylinder, turbo diesel engines. The 2.4-litre engine develops 148bhp and 343Nm of torque mated to a manual gearbox. While the 2.8-litre engine which is more powerful, churning out 172bhp and 360Nm of torque with an automatic transmission. Toyota may also introduce a 163bhp, 2.7-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine with the Fortuner as well. These three powertrains are identical to the ones found in the new Innova Crysta and will also feature ‘Eco’ and ‘Power’ driving modes.
The Fortuner will get a 6-speed manual with the smaller 2.4-litre engine, and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic transmission which will be offered with the larger 2.8-litre engine. The petrol engine if offered in the Innova may feature both automatic and manual options. The automatic Fortuner is also expected to feature paddle shifters on the steering wheel. The Fortuner is expected to only be offered as a 4X4 for the Indian market.
The all new Toyota Fortuner has a wheelbase of 2,745mm. the total length of the car measures at 4,795mm and is 1,855mm wide with a maximum height of 1,850mm.
The new Fortuner will feature a powered tailgate/rear door with anti-pinch feature. The head lamps with LED DRLs with auto leveling function, and electronically adjustable seats for driver, push button stop start, rear seat entertainment screens with 12V power power outlets. The infotainment system in the centre console features navigation, mirror link, with Bluetooth and AUX input as well in addition to a glove box with chiller function, Digital Auto AC, all auto power window, tilt and telescopic steering as standard.
Just like the Innova that was launched earlier this year, the all new Fortuner will come leaded with safety features and technology. ABS with EBD and three airbags (driver, driver knee and front passenger airbags) will be standard across the range. Additional side and curtain airbags will be offered in the higher variants. The Fortuner will also come with traction control, rear parking camera with front and rear parking sensors.
Toyota has confirmed that the Fortuner will be launched on November 7, 2017 while booking have already commenced and a micro website for the Toyota Fortuner is already live.
The second generation Fortuner may be priced slightly more premium than the outgoing model. While competing with the new Ford Endeavour which has been outselling the Fortuner in the past few months and has also received a heavy price cut, Toyota needs to price the SUV competitively. We expect the Fortuner to be priced around Rs. 28 lakh ex-showroom Delhi.
