Tag Heuer recently brought together two of the biggest sporting stars in the world today – Formula 1 reigning champion, Lewis Hamilton, and golf legend, Tiger Woods. They obviously have much in common – unrelenting ambition, coupled with the ability and talent to master their respective arts, both of which require absolute precision. Speaking of which, they both also sport Tag Heuer watches on respective wrists. Here are some excerpts from their interaction:
Lewis Hamilton: Tiger, I would like to thank you for the pin flag you gave me. I received it at a special time of the Formula 1 season, when my team and I still had so much to do but we could see what lay ahead, and what needed to be done. Coming from such a great champion as you, this very unique gift reminded me what one can achieve if you keep pushing. I’m no “Tiger Woods” but I still wanted to humbly give you something special: my winning China Grand Prix racing overall.
Tiger Woods: Lewis, this champion’s overall is just one of a long line of winning overalls in future seasons! I am honored that you picked such a personal gift for me, something you wore and that achieved such a fantastic win with you! I guess the minute you slip in your racing outfit, the only thing you focus on is your race.
LH: When I race it’s like, “Too much fear and I lose, too little fear and I lose — or worse.” I don’t get the sense that golfing puts you under this kind of pressure. How do you feel about it?
TW: Just like a Formula 1 driver, I’m alone during a tournament. I have to focus on every detail, forget everything else and give it my best. But unlike you, I know a mistake won’t cost me my life. I think that the pressure I feel is physical and mental and I am the one who puts myself under it. For me, every shot is crucial.

LH: As a Formula 1 driver, zero mistakes is the limit that you must never exceed. No margin of error is allowed. And still, you have to get better each time, improve and set the pace for others. Tiger, how can you still find in you the power to improve when you are already the uncontested best in your game?
TW: I never stop wanting to improve; to play better every time. There are records standing that I want to break. Do you consider a finish line the be-all and end-all?
LH: A finish line for me is only the beginning of the next race. Even winning the Championship this year is really just the beginning of the new season — of course, with the extra thrill of having won once and having to strive to win again. That is what keeps me going, especially as I’m at the beginning of my career. I guess when the time comes for me to stop racing in Formula One, I will be looking forward to the next challenge in my life, and will want to be the best at it. This really is the one side of me I would never want to lose, this urge to be the best at what I do.
Tiger, what’s your relation with time?
TW: Time is the pace of my life, but I remain the pacesetter. This is my freedom. And every increment of time counts, especially now that I am a father. Every single second with my child is pure luxury and brings me so much, I want to make the most of it.
This is what I admire about TAG Heuer: they have mastered every increment of time, from 1/10th to 1/100th to 1/1,000th to even 1/10,000th of second, and they are still looking for even more precision — whether on wristwatches or with timing systems. In this sense, we share the same philosophy and passion. For us, better is not an adjective, it is a verb. This is why I have renewed my contract with TAG Heuer. I feel we are moving at the same pace and sharing the same vision.
What is your vision of time?
LH: I’m still quite young and time for me is like a credit on my account to do more, to train more, to improve and re-think myself. I see some people who are always running around but do not take the time to step back and challenge themselves. I do, constantly. Sometimes I sit down, and you would think I am not doing anything, but this is when I analyze the challenges ahead and what it will take to overcome them. This is when I look at my mistakes and visualize what I need to do to improve. It is the time when I set up my personal strategy. This is why I am so proud to be a TAG Heuer Ambassador. The brand is not a spur of the moment brand. It has a long history of innovation, going all the way back to 1860. To achieve this and remain at the top of technology and performance today, they have had to step back too, and re-think and re-invent themselves over and over again.
TW: Time never stops…
LH: … why should we? |
