Last year, we brought you the first images of Bentley’s all-new flagship, the Mulsanne, as it was unveiled at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California. Well, it didn’t take long for the Mulsanne to grace our shores, as Bentley New Delhi unveiled this machine at the British High Commissioners’ residence in the diplomatic quarters of New Delhi recently. And, if you happen to find 2.9 crores, perhaps under the couch, you could conceivably get yourself one of these imposing beauties by years’ end.
The Mulsanne has been conceived, styled and engineered entirely at Bentley’s new state-of-the-art headquarters at Crewe in England – it comes from a clean sheet design and gets a bespoke chassis. It’s inspired by the massive 8-litre Bentleys of the 1930s. The headlight arrangement, in similar fashion, has the larger lamps on the inside and the smaller ones on the outside – in this case they also have daytime-running LED’s, which form a ring around an inset xenon. The lights are designed to make the car look unmistakable while going down the road – not that there’s much chance of mistaking this behemoth for anything less worthy mind you. The name comes from the famed Mulsanne straight (and corner) at the legendary Le Mans circuit in France where Bentley have triumphed on no less than six occasions.
The Mulsanne, like its predecessor, features a massive, hand-assembled, 6.7 liter V8. However, the new engine is lighter and has cylinder de-activation and variable cam phasing technology to help reduce fuel consumption and emissions. And to serve your, undoubtedly, very specific requirements, the Mulsanne will offer a palette of 114 paint colours, nine wood veneers, 21 carpet colours, and 24 interior leather hides. Apart from this, the company can also provide innumerable custom solutions, in terms of specific colour and interior combinations.
According to Bentley, each Mulssane takes some very skilled craftsman a painstaking nine weeks to build, as opposed to a few hours for a mass produced vehicle. So, really, its 3 crores well spent if you think about it.
