Parting Shot

It wasn’t so long ago that your eyes popped out of your head when you saw a Ferrari or Lamborghini on our city streets. My, how things have changed!

Sure, they still make an impression. But now, you need a few dozen on the street at the same time – all competing for curb appeal – to really make an impact. And that’s exactly what took place in the Capital, on the second last Sunday in February. The sun was shining, and the supercars were out en masse – courtesy of a Supercar Run organised by Bellset Entertainment.

The parking lot at the Claridges Hotel was filled with exotica of every variety – such as a Ferrari 599 & F430, Lamborghini Gallardo, Maserati Gran Tursimo, a couple of Aston Martins, Bentleys, Audi R8s, Porsche 911s, a Jaguar XK-R, and a Rolls Royce Phantom. The sight was such, in fact, that a Mercedes SL 55 AMG looked like it just about made the cut. BMWs were commonplace, and M3s appeared to be the staple diet. There were even some classics like an Acura NSX.

The best part, however, was the enthusiasm with which these well healed owners were willing to take to the streets, and share their prized possessions with the gawking public. And most were quite enthusiastic behind the wheel as well – although, to really drive these cars, a controlled environment like a track is deeply needed. Nonetheless, it was quite a spectacle to see these stunning machines, all together, on the streets of our Capital. Did someone say there was recently a recession?
