Mercedes-AMG all set to add two more variants to the GT range in India with the launch of the go-faster GT R and drop-top GT Roadster on the 21st of August, 2017.
Come August 21, 2017, Mercedes-AMG will launch the GT R – yes, the go-faster, hardcore and track-focused version of the original GT – in India. But, that’s not just it. Sharing the launch stage with the GT-R on the very same day will be the drop-top GT Roadster. Expect the launch event to be a bit of a noisy affair!
For the uninitiated, the AMG GT R is currently the fastest street-legal Mercedes on sale around the world. The AMG GT R is based on the GT S, albeit it gets some serious improvements. First off is the engine – the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol motor is still the star of the package but it’s been tweaked to develop a whopping 577bhp – up by 74bhp in comparison to the currently available GT S. Peak torque has also been increased to 700Nm from 650Nm. Power is fed to rear-wheels by the same seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, albeit Mercedes says that the transmission software has been reprogrammed for quicker shifts. Thanks to the improvements, the GT R will clock 0-100km/h in 3.6 seconds – two-tenths quicker than the GT S. The top speed is 319km/h.
Because the GT R is not meant for straight line shenanigans alone, the chassis has been modified, too. Additionally, it gets firmer suspension setup and uprated brakes. Not only that, there’s an active rear-wheel steering system which ensures that you clip all the apexes on a racetrack. In addition to that, it comes fitted with super-sticky Michelin Cup 2 tyres for better grip. Plus, there’s a huge rear wing that generates as much as 155kg of downforce. All these modifications make the GT R one serious racer, you’ve to say.
If you like to take things easy and at a relatively slower pace, though, the AMG GT Roadster should pique your interest more. It’s also based on the GT and gets the same 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8. However, things are a bit relaxed in the drop-top version since the engine only develops 463bhp and 630Nm of torque. There’s a more performance-oriented GT C Roadster version available in global markets, but it won’t be coming to India.
The AMG GT R and GT Roadster will be brought into the country as CBUs. So, expect both of them to get a hefty price tag – somewhere north of Rs 2 crore mark is our guess!
