The Mercedes-AMG GT R has set the fastest ever lap around the Buddh International Circuit by a production car.
Days before its official launch in India on August 21, 2017 – the Mercedes-AMG GT has set a record lap time at the Buddh International Circuit (BIC) in Greater Noida.
Being driven by an AMG driver – Christian Hohenadel, the AMG GT R scorched the BIC track at a record lap time of 2 minutes 09.853 seconds, becoming the fastest production car ever to accomplish this record. The speed test was conducted by FMSCI. Previously, the fastest Mercedes road car at the BIC was the SLS AMG – which did the 5.125 km lap in 2 minutes 14.52 seconds in March 2013.
Roland Folger, Managing Director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, said, “The Mercedes-AMG GT R which has spent a large portion of its development time at the Green Hell of the Nürburgring has proven its racing mettle at our very own Buddh International Circuit. It is only fitting that ahead of its India debut, the Mercedes-AMG GT R, holds the title of clocking the fastest lap ever by a production car in India. Mercedes-Benz has a formidable presence in the racing and motorsports arena, and this strong lineage is present in our vehicle design and technology, both in performance and aesthetics. The AMG GT R is an embodiment of Mercedes-AMG’s global expertise in creating a sports car that every performance enthusiast around the world, would like to own and experience every day.”
The AMG GT R is currently the fastest street-legal Mercedes on sale around the world. The AMG GT R is based on the GT S, albeit it gets some serious improvements. First off is the engine – the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol motor is still the star of the package but it’s been tweaked to develop a whopping 577bhp – up by 74bhp in comparison to the GT S. Peak torque has also been increased to 700Nm from 650Nm.
Power is fed to rear-wheels by the same seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and Mercedes claims that the transmission software has been reprogrammed for quicker shifts. Thanks to the improvements, the GT R can dismiss 0-100km/h in just 3.6 seconds, and clock a top speed of 319km/h.
The AMG GT R will launch in India alongside the AMG GT Roadster.
